General Information
- Tentative
lecture schedule (html file) as of August 2007 (before
classes start).
The actual material covered in each lecture is below.
- Textbook: Elements of Modern Algebra,
5th or 6th edition, by J. Gilbert and L. Gilbert, Brooks/Cole
Publishing Company.
- Prerequisites: MATH2107, or equivalent. Students
who have not passed the prerequisite course may be automatically
de-registered during the term.
- Classes begin: Thursday September 6, 2007.
Classes end: Friday November 30, 2007.
- Term mark: There will be four tests, each worth
15%, taken in tutorials on October
4, October 18, November 1, November 15, 2007. Your worst test score
will be dropped. Total portion of the final mark in midterm tests: 45%.
Important: to pass the
course you need at least 30% in midterm tests (equivalent to 13.5% out
of the 45% of the total marks
corresponding to midterm tests).
- Evaluation: Term mark is 45%. The final
examination is 55%.
- Plagiarism and Cheating:
- Plagiarism is defined on page 61 of the undergraduate
calendar
as an instructional offense that occurs when a student uses or passes
off "as one's own idea or product, work of another without expressly
giving credit" This includes plagiarism involving material lifted from
the Internet. Plagiarism is a serious offense. The penalties for
students who have been found to have plagiarized are a failed grade at
the least sever and suspension, expulsion or notation on transcripts
for serious or repeated cases. Plagiarism is just one form of Cheating.
All forms of cheating are taken very seriously and
will be dealt with swiftly and severely.
- Withdrawal: The last day for withdrawal from the course
without academic penalties is November
09, 2007.
- Students with Disabilities: Students with Disabilities who
require academic accommodations please feel free to see me, and contact
the Paul Menton Centre to complete the required forms. Last day to
submit (to the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities)

These problems are from the textbook Elements of Modern Algebra
by J. Gilbert and L. Gilbert, 5th and 6th edition.
These lists of problems per test are tentative (as of August 2007)
and will be updated before each test. However, given our previous
experience with this course, it is unlikely that any changes will
be done to these lists.
