Teaching lefties
If [you're] a complete beginner, then it's time to readthat paragraph on
left-handed calligraphy at the start of most calligraphy text-books. The
key-words here must be patience and perseverance. These qualities will
be required from both you and your student. Yes, calligraphy presents a
unique set of problems for left-handers, in addition to those encountered
by all students, but they are not insurmountable, as evidenced by the left-handed
calligraphers on this list. I am proud to count myself among their number.
The bad news is that in general Italic, or indeed any script requiring
a steeper pen angle, is more difficult for the sinistral student than the
flatter-pen-angled scripts, such as Foundational and Uncial. The good news?
Left-handedness is a constant challenge in a right-handed world, so you
will probably find that your student is a resourceful soul and a creative
problem-solver.
Don't be afraid to admit you've never done this before. Your student
probably won't be too surprised, there are only so many of us lefties to
go around. It will be a learning experience for both of you. Try out some
of the techniques for yourself, to get a feel for pen-angle, the angle
at which you should turn your paper to achieve this angle using left-handed
or straight nibs, etc. This will give you a head-start on any questions
which may arise. Experiment with left-oblique nibs, straight nibs, oblique
pen-holders, and encourage your student to do the same. As Kerry pointed
out, no two lefties calligraph the same way, and everyone has to find their
own method through trial and error.
Most books recommend using left-oblique nibs in a dip pen (William Mitchell
and Osmiroid make these, there may be others) and turning the paper down
to the right, the paper needs to be turned more the steeper the pen angle
required. This is a good starting point, but beware! Some lefties are 'hookers'!
(Have I shocked you?) This means they right with the hand above the writing
line and with the wrist hooked. It is possible to do calligraphy this way,
although push strokes become pull strokes and it requires some lateral
thinking to visualise the construction of the letter-forms.
I would describe myself as a part-time 'hooker'. This is my style for
handwriting, but for calligraphy I adopt a more conformist approach (left-oblique
nibs and tilted paper).
I have a stack of information on working methods, generously donated
by the Sinister Scribes during the last great southpaw debate, and will
happily forward it to you if you like.

Initiation à la calligraphie
I have a set of (personal) lecture notes in French for novices who are
interested. The set(s) include Level 1 and Level 2 (Beginners and Advanced)
and are usually given in conjunction with weekend workshops in the Ottawa
area. These notes may be useful for a correspondence course, or even if
you wish to learn calligraphy on your own, as the amount of language used
is minimal. Cost: $15 per set. (revised, 1997)

Slides
I finally finished typing the last of a set of notes to go with four
slide sets I have been helping to produce. It has been a very interesting
project set up jointly between the British Library and CLAS, a new calligraphy
and lettering society over here. With the help of Michele Brown at the BL I was
allowed acces to the British Libraries slide collection. This is a stack of
literally tens of thousands of slides built up over the years all filed in the
sequence they were ordered from the library by scholars. It would take months to
go through the entire collection, I was allowed two days!! It was like being
allowed to run through a grocery store for five minutes only and pile everything
you could in your trolly befor your time expired.Wonderful but also desperate!!
I could'nt see everything I wanted (I'd prepared a hit list of manuscripts I had
seen reproduced in books) and kept discovering things I never new existed and
all the time the clock was running!! The outcome was a selection of about 120
slides covering the period from 400 to 1500 which I have divided into four slide
rolls with an accompanying sheet of notes, they are not perfect but are a unique
release which won't be repeated. They are being distributed by CLAS and details
can be got from Sue Cavendish (101344.3245@compuserve.com)
who is a member of Cyberscribes
Ewan Clayton.

CALLIGRAPHY & LETTERING ARTS SOCIETY SLIDE HISTORICAL
SLIDES
In association with the British Library Education Service,
CLAS is delighted to announce four eagerly awaited
historical slide rolls. The slides have been carefully
selected for CLAS by Ewan Clayton, MA, with the assistance
of Dr Michelle Brown of the British Library.
Slide Roll A (33 Slides) Late Antiquity to Carolingian
Period
This slide roll spans a period from the first century AD to
the carolingian period. Amongst its highlights are slides of
both writing and illuminating in the Vespasian Psalter, the
Lindisfarne Gospels, The Book of Nunaminster and several
great carolingian gospel books including the Grandvaal
Bible. There are several examples of roman cursive hands,
and good examples of uncials, half uncials, informal insular
cursive and carolingian minuscule.
Slide Roll B (29 Slides) Late Anglo Saxon to Protogothic
This slide roll concentrates on late Anglo Saxon Britain and
follows through to the beginning of the gothic period. It
shows examples of the classic English caroline hand (as in
Harley 2904) and of simple built up capitals (versals). The
slides also illustrate several styles of early medieval
illumination; polychromatic pen drawings in Harley 603, the
rich illumination of the Benedictional of St Ethelwold, and
the elaborate yet naive style of the Silos Apocalypse from
Spain. Other highlights include close ups of the hand of
Edui Basan. The roll concludes with a fine protogothic
manuscript.
Slide Roll C (23 Slides) The High Middle Ages
This roll covers the period of the high middle ages. It
contains examples of all the major kinds of gothic scripts
and extracts of the writing and illumination in such
manuscripts as the Evesham Psalter, the Luttrell Psalter and
the Bedford Hours. There are also some fine examples of
complex page layouts. The roll concludes with a musical
manuscript written in a circular form.
Slide Roll D (33 Slides) The Renaissance
This roll principally concerns scripts in Italy. It contains
many good examples of cursive chancery hands and shows
formal manuscripts written by, amongst others, Bartolomeo
San Vito and Arrighi. The Arrighi manuscript is Royal 12 C
viii, originally presented to Henry VIII, the slides also
show details of its elaborate binding. Writing by the future
queen Elizabeth I is shown and the roll concludes with
slides of William Morris' manuscript 'The Rubyat of Omar
Kyyam' in which he employs a script influenced by the hand
of Arrighi.
The Slides are supplied in roll form, suitable for mounting

Paleographic references
Perhaps some Cyberscribes are familiar with Kevin Kiernan's work on the
Beowulf manuscipt, and how it has influenced the British Museum to
undertake a project toward published facimiles of many old manuscripts on
CD. See http://www.uky.edu/~kiernan/BL/kportico.html, or
http://portico.bl.uk/access/beowulf/electronic-beowulf.html,
Another paleographer helping bring the field into the computer age is
Bernard Muir at the University of Melbourne. Check his web site at
http://www.arts.unimelb.edu/Dept/English/bernard.html, and particularly
check out his current multimedia project, DUCTUS. Already running on
Hypercard, it is being developed as a dual platform (Mac/Windows)
version. It will include an introductory history of Western handwriting
and detailed interactive analyses of forty scripts.
I also suggest that people planning calligraphy conferences might
consider inviting presentations from Kevin Kiernan and Bernard Muir.
